*Waldo version 3.1.2 -- Important Information*
05/24/92
To run Waldo you should change the application size to 1000.
Consult your Macintosh manuals for specific information on
changing the size of programs.
Version 3.1.2 Corrects the bug that occurs when Selecting a File
name from the File List to be loaded. In version 3.1.1 the selected
File name was not being shown in the Load dialogue as it should have
been. This is now corrected.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Do not include quotes in a Title. For some reason
this will confuse Waldo and text will not format correctly!
Version 3.1.1 Corrects the bug that occurs when Transferring a Title
from the Button Titles List to the Titles List. It also improves the
interface.
Version 3.1.1 refines Select function for Scan List as well as
refining the List view of HyperButtons. In both cases the Message Box
displays the number of the next item in the Queue in brackets.
And Click will exit without repositioning an item Selected from the
List.
Waldo version 3.1 is update. New and old users alike should read
this document.
4/92
NOTE: Discard any any version of Waldo earlier than 3.0.6.
Version 3.0.6.1 corrects for the lack of a return after a line
in WaldoDocs and for the title field at the bottom of Document Pages.
Version 3.0.6 is a minor fix for functions in previous versions
including the Picture List and some other minor problems including
not displaying Xstacks with TwinText enabled.
Check the Import Page in Waldo on the left upper corner for
the current version number.
NOTE: Waldo Version 3.0.6 and later replaces the "Picture" function
with the "XStacks" function. XStack stands for eXternal Stacks.
The new name reflects the great range of possibilities for this
function rather than the limited term "Pictures."
You may have as many XStacks as there are Pages in a given
Waldo document (up to 999 Pages and XStacks).
(The Picture function was limited to 10 different stacks.)
NOTE: This document was formatted with Monaco 9 point and with a
return at the end of each line for BBS display. New York
12 point or Palatino 12 point are acceptable alternative fonts.
NOTE: To users of earlier versions of Waldo, please read this whole document
as there have been many changes to Waldo since the last release (3.0.6.1).
Some changes have been in response to changes in HyperCard as well
as bugs in various versions of HyperCard. There is now just one version
of Waldo, version 3.1.1,which includes all Second Sight functions. Waldo
3.1.1 is compatible with HyperCard version 2.1 as well as System 7.
Waldo V 3.1.1 requires HyperCard version 2.0 as a minimum.
04/92
Please support ShareWare! This is the only way that programmers can
provide good and inexpensive software to the public.
NOTE: Waldo requires that you use HyperCard version 2.0 or higher.
A hard disk is required for Waldo.
NOTE: HyperCard Help is available from all Pages in Waldo!
If the HyperCard stack called WALDOHELP is at the same level as the current
copy of Waldo, then "holding down" Shift and Command keys while holding down
the key with "?" will display an interactive HyperCard help stack for Waldo.
NOTE: For Waldo Help, hold all 3 keys down till Waldo Help appears.
(You may also access WALDOHelp by holding down the Shift key and selecting Help
from the "Go" menu.)
If no document is loaded into Waldo and the Command key is held down and
the "?" key is pushed, the standard HyperCard Help stack is displayed. If there
is a document loaded, then the Command and "?" keys will bring up a HyperCard
stack named (name of the document loaded)+Help, eg.,NEWSHELP not NEWS HELP.
(That is, if one was provided by the author and it is present at
the same level as the document.)
(Authors may include help stacks with any Waldo document.)
Waldo is $15. Nebraska residents include Nebraska sales tax.
Other ShareWare Waldo programs are available.
If you use Waldo for more than a month, then please make your check out to:

*|The Meaning of Waldo|*

*Electronic Publishing...the next wave.*
August 2, 1991 issue of PUBLISHERS WEEKLY ®...
"University Presses: Weighing the Options," by John F. Baker and John Mutter:
From an article covering the 1991 annual meeting of the Association
of American University Presses:
Lisa Freeman, director of the University of Minnesota
Press,...predicted that the scholarly monograph "will
survive, perhaps in a different form," particularly in
electronic format....
Another attendee spoke along the same lines:
Ann Okerson, director of Scientific and Academic Publishing,
American Research Libraries, gave a pungent paean to new
technology that left print-orientated publishers reeling. She
spoke of "scholarship created by new electronic networks that
hasn't yet appeared in print..."
Okerson described a new movement among scholars--"a breath of
fresh air"--in which they communicate by linked electronic
networks. Some scholarly journals are now available only
electronically, and there are more to come...Some of these
electronic journals, Okerson said, already have subscriber
lists in four figures..."
According to PUBLISHERS WEEKLY (August 9, 1991), the Association of American
Publishers, in a letter to a "key congressional chairman," has called electronic
publishing "the fastest-growing sector of the book and journal publishing
industry." The letter also states:
The Commerce Department has forecast 1993 revenues from electronic
publishing as matching the revenues publishers earn from "traditional
hard-copy publishing."
^
*The Meaning of Waldo.*
NOTE: Waldo requires that you use HyperCard version 2.0 or higher.
A hard disk is required for Waldo.
Waldo is the most powerful and easiest to use of all hypertext programs.
Its Bulletin Board interface is unique. Waldo's low price, powerful features,
ease of use, IBM compatibility and online help combine to
give the best value available.
Waldo is an application for reading and referencing large amounts
(up to 999 “Pages”) of information. That information may be
in news magazine or book format or archived information as in database
With Waldo at your side, you can begin publishing your own
E-mag (electronic magazine) or E-books (electronic book). Waldo is also a
complete system for publishing online with Second Sight™ (and Red Ryder
Host V 2.0+) BBS software from The FreeSoft Company.
NOTE: Second Sight is NOT necessary to use Waldo and Waldo may be used
totally independently of a BBS system.
Waldo is a powerful means of distributing E-mags and E-Books over modems,
networks and on disk.
Now simply use your wordprocessor to create your book, newspaper, magazine,
corporate newsletter, client newsletter, medical newsletter, etc. Waldo is
versatile enough to use to reference office memos or technical notes. Waldo is
perfect for electronic publishing of scholarly and technical monographs.
Waldo can be used to make user's manuals.
^
*Waldo is ROM*
Waldo is a read-only application. The files to be read are created with
an outliner, wordprocessor, database or other text-file-creating
application such as Texter. Waldo has features that make it especially suited
for reading information--as a vehicle for the distribution of read-only
information. Waldo is like ROM and a wordprocessor is like RAM. ROM
stands for Read-Only Memory. RAM stands for Random Access Memory.
ROM is a chip that holds information that can be read from but not
modified. The information in the ROM was at some time in someone’s
RAM. RAM is dynamic and holds the information that is ever changing
and can be read from and written to.
Waldo does have the ability to Copy Text from a document Page into the
Macintosh’s clipboard. Text can be pasted into another Macintosh application.
^
*Navigation, Pages and Titles*
Waldo has several features that set it apart from other text
applications. Waldo has special navigation and referencing features
such as Title Lists, Button Lists, Button Title Lists, Page Buttons,
Tables of Contents, Folded Pages (sub-Tables of Contents), XStacks Buttons,
XStack Lists and others.
Refer to Buttons (Import Page and All Other Pages) for more complete
information on buttons. You may save Page & Title references into
Title Lists. You may save often-searched-for words and phrases into Button
Lists. The Second Sight function saves the names of files into a
“File List for OUTPUT files.“ The Title List, Button List, Files
List and HyperButton List may be saved to and loaded from disk. Waldo's
ability to have Titles, Tables of Contents, Folded Page Tables and Folded
Pages gives the power to organize large amounts of information into logical
blocks of Pages with Tables to access them from. Waldo also gives the reader
tools to reorganize the information to meet his individual needs.
^
¥2
*Waldo does Pictures.*
(The Yen Symbol is replaced in this text with a capitol "Y" because of the
constraints of formatting.) XStack is short for external stack.
Waldo will recognize XStack format characters--the Yen symbol plus a
number from 0 to 999. (The Yen symbol in most fonts is Option Y with Caps Lock
"up" or disabled.) an XStack can be a single card HyperCard stack with
special stack script that will take the reader back to the Page from
which he left. A click of the mouse would display an XStack and another
click takes you back to the Page. XStack could easily contain
animation and sound. The limitation is your imagination and the size of
the stack. (Pictures can contain color if they contain color Pict resources.
With the latest version of HyperCard (V 2.1 04/92) QuickTime movies and
Apple Events are supported.
See your HyperCard handbook about displaying color Pict resources.)
Click on the "XStack List" icon on the bottom far right and you will be
shown a List of all XStack Buttons and their Page, if there
are any in the current document. If there are not any XStack Buttons
in the current document, then the "XStack List" will be "grayed."
The XStack stack should be named the same as the document with the
"Yen" at the end of the name and a number from 0 to 999, IMFOMATY1
and should reside at the same level as the document.
^
*WaldoWare™ and Waldo utilities.*
There are also utilities and applications for Waldo.
EventDatabase™ and MacProduct™ which are fixed-field HyperCard
databases that support Folded Pages as well as XStacks and output in
Waldo compatible format. An ARTWAY application for writing in Waldo format is call
Texter™.
ARTWAY has a FreeWare utility that will convert the "message to text" files
from Red Ryder Host and/or Second Sight into Waldo compatible files. It
includes auto-Folded Pages for multiple message bases.
UserWare>WALDO™ is a FreeWare application for converting UserWare files
to WALDO documents. UserWare markets several HyperText readers that run
on IBM compatibles. UserWare applications read in plain text as does
WALDO.
IRIS, PRISM and DART are HyperText programs from Ted Husted and UserWare. They,
like WALDO, use a plain ascii text file format.
Ted Husted
UserWare
4 Falcon Lane East, Fairport NY 14450-3312.
(716) 425-3463.
Since a Waldo document is a plain text file it is much smaller than the
corresponding Waldo + loaded text. XStack get to be large files
very quickly--a small XStack can easily be 15k. A small text file
transfers over modem or network quickly and easily and is readable
with any wordprocessor. The XStack are optional and may or may not
be transferred depending on the person receiving the files. Small size,
optional XStacks, compatibility with any wordprocessor and the
powerful features that Waldo adds, plus the utilities, combine to make a
powerful integrated system for the dissemination of information.

*|How to create a Waldo document.|*
^
¥0
How to create a Waldo document.
*A Waldo document is a plain text document*
The basics:
A Waldo document uses 4 ASCII characters to turn a simple document
into a Waldo. The caret, the asterisk, the vertical bar, and the Yen
symbol are the only codes needed. By placing these 4 characters into a
text file, you can create Pages, Tables of Contents, Folded Tables of
Contents, Folded Pages and XStacks Buttons. These five concepts give
greater order and depth to complex documents. The document itself still
remains readable by any wordprocessor, including any IBM PC, but now it
can be transmitted to another person possessing Waldo and be read in a more
lucid and pleasing manner and with greater retention. The Waldo document will
be kept and referenced because reading is so much easier with Waldo.
^
¥0
*Making Pages*
A caret symbol marks the end of a Page. Place it on a line by itself,
followed by a return, at the end of a block of text. The text for
a Page MUST NOT exceed 16k in size.
NOTE: If Waldo output is to be viewed online on a BBS (Bulletin
Board System), then EVERY line of text must end with a RETURN. If you do not
put a return after each line, then the text will disappear off the
edge of the screen.
NOTE: Authors put a return at the end of every line "only" if it is to
be displayed on a BBS. Placing a return at the end of each page is a
constraint if the reader wishes to select a different font size or type
face.
^
¥4
*Giving Titles to Pages*
Place a line of text, not to exceed 70 characters, at the beginning of a
Page. Place an asterisk at the beginning and the end of the line. Make
sure there are no spaces between the leading (first) asterisk and the first
character of the Title or between the trailing (last) asterisk and the last
character of the Title. Put a RETURN at the end of the line! Actually,
any contiguous text no longer than 70 characters may be marked as a Title
in this manner; the text does not need to be the first line in a Page,
although that is best in most cases. The Title cannot be located beyond
the 15th line of a Page!
NOTE: Authors HyperCard considers a line any text ending in a return--you
may call it a paragraph but HyperCard calls it a line.
Clicking on a Title, in a Table of Contents, takes you to its Page.
Again, the Title must be on a SINGLE LINE with a return--this is important as
Waldo uses this format to create Tables of Contents!!
^
¥0
*Putting a group of Pages together as Folded Pages*
The beginning of a series of FOLDED Pages is marked by a Fold Title. A
Fold Title begins with an asterisk and a vertical bar. Place a line of text
not to exceed 70 characters before the first Folded Page. Place an asterisk
and a vertical bar at the beginning and the end of the line. Make sure
there are no spaces between the leading (first) asterisk-bar and the first
character of the Title nor between the trailing (last) asterisk-bar and
the last character of the Title.
Put a caret on the next line by itself followed by a RETURN.
asterisk-bar. This is the Title bar-asterisk-RETURN
CARET RETURN
Put a Vertical Bar on a line by itself followed by a RETURN, AFTER the
caret at the END of the Last Page of the Fold.
CARET RETURN
VERTICALBAR RETURN
"Vertical Bar" is ASCII #124
^
*The Folded Table of Contents*
Waldo will create a Fold Table for each series of Folded Pages. It is
functionally equivalent to the Table of Contents on the IMPORT Page. It
has the added features of the FOLD=> and the <=FOLD Buttons.
Clicking on a Title takes you to its Page.
^
*The XStack Button.*
¥2
The XStacks are marked in the document by the placement of a Yen
symbol and a number (one number from 0 to 999) at the beginning of a
Page. Place the characters on a line by themselves with a RETURN.
This marks the page for an XStack. You may have as many
XStacks in a document as there are Pages. When a formatted file is
loaded into Waldo it will check for the "Yen" character. If it finds
“Y”, it will create a button on that page at the bottom right. It is a
small button with an "X." When you click the button, it looks for a
HyperCard stack called by the name of the file you loaded plus "Yen"
with a number from 0 to 999--INFOMATY0 (it is simple in practice).
That stack MUST be at the same "LEVEL" as the FILE you loaded!
(You should put all files associated with a document in a folder
named the same as the document with a "-F" extension "name-F".)
Waldo will make an XStack Button on each Page that has an XStack character.
Clicking on the button will display that XStack--a second click
(if this is how you programmed it) will return you to the Page you left.
"Yen" is ASCII #180 (Option Y "caps lock" up--most fonts)
The "STACK" SCRIPT of the XStack stack COULD read:
on openStack
hide menuBar
end openStack
on idle
wait until the mouseClick
visual effect iris close
pop card
end idle
----------------
NOTE: This is an example of a "minimum" script and as such represents the
least you could do. Use your imagination to create "XStacks" that contain
animation, sound and multiple cards, just have some way of "popping the card"
to return to the card you left from in Waldo.
^
*More About XStack Buttons*
XStacks can contain color if they have color Pict resources. See your
HyperCard handbook about displaying color Pict resources.
The stack that is displayed by the XStack Button may contain as many
pages as you wish. It could contain text, graphics, sound, speech, music,
animation, video, or any combination of them. The only requirement is that
you include a script that says "pop cd" to return to Waldo.
NOTE FOR PROGRAMMERS: When opened, the script of the stack of the XStack
stack could pop the pushed value into a variable or other container, eg.:
pop cd into the last cd field
use that data later to return to Waldo.
Please ALWAYS have the script issue the command "visual effect iris close"
before returning to Waldo. This is the standard visual effect for returning
to Waldo from an XStack stack.
^
*Sending and Receiving Waldos*
When preparing Waldo documents, be sure to put all files associated with
that document into a folder. Give the folder the same name as the document
together with a "-F" extension -- "name-F", without the quotes. This way
all associated files (help stacks, XStack stacks, notes) will be at the same
level for "loading" and will not get lost on your disk. This is important!
Also be sure to use an archive program like Compact Pro or Stuffit to archive
and compress all files that will be transmitted over a modem or network!
Stuffit is available as shareware on most bulletin boards or as a commercial
program from Aladdin Systems, Inc. Compact Pro is shareware and is available
from most bulletin boards.
Compact Pro: Cyclos: 109 Davis Avenue, Brookline, MA 02146
Aladdin Systems: 408-685-9175.

*Trouble Shooting for Authors*
If, after writing your Waldo document, you load it into Waldo and it does
not load the way you expected it to, then perform a simple analysis on the
document. Start with the first page, using the right arrow key at the bottom
of the Page and go slowly from page to page. Repeat, using the Table of
Contents and any Folded Pages Tables of Contents to display each Page, starting
with Page one and working forward to the last Page. Any mistakes in formatting
will be found--load the document into a wordprocessor and correct any formatting
errors, save the document to disk and reload it into Waldo.
NOTE: Waldo will not make errors in loading a document, so please check
the text carefully for formatting errors. ALSO leading spaces at the beginning
of lines that contain formatting characters will confuse Waldo. It is best
to compose text on a wordprocessor that will show "space" characters and
"return" characters!
NOTE: ARTWAY has a program called WaldoTools™ for checking
documents for proper formatting--it will mark any formatting errors for quick
correction of Waldo documents. ARTWAY also has a program for writing
Waldo documents which automatically performs all formatting and has many
of the same advanced features as Waldo does, plus more that Waldo does not.
It is called Texter™. Both are available direct from ARTWAY.

*|File Menu, Go Menu and Waldo Menu|*
^
*File Menu: The Print Report* option in the File menu in Waldo has a
Waldo Report template set up. Check the Marked Cards option for use in
conjunction with Marked Pages to print only those Pages you have marked.
There are other functions you may perform on Marked Pages from the message
box--see your HyperCard handbook for more uses and information on printing
reports. See Marked Pages.
^
*Help from the Go Menu/Command&?/Shift&Command&?*
NOTE: Waldo requires that you use HyperCard version 2.0 or higher.
A hard disk is required for Waldo.
NOTE: HyperCard Help is available from all Pages in Waldo!
If the HyperCard stack called WALDOHELP is at the same level as the current
copy of Waldo, then "holding down" Shift and Command keys while holding down
the key with the question mark (?) will display an interactive HyperCard help
stack for Waldo.
NOTE: For WALDOHELP--hold all 3 keys down till WALDOHELP appears.
You may also access WALDOHELP by selecting Help from the "Go" menu
while holding down the Shift key.
If no document is loaded into Waldo and the Command key is held down and then
the "?" key is pushed, the standard HyperCard Help stack is displayed. If there
is a document loaded, then the Command and "?" keys will bring up a HyperCard
stack named (the name of the DOCUMENT loaded)+Help.
e.g., NEWSHELP (not NEWS HELP)
(Authors may include help stacks with any Waldo document. Help stacks
can contain any information such as a glossary of terms or index.)
^
*Show Button Names*
When selected, a checkmark appears to the left of the menu item and
the field at the bottom of each Page displays the name of most Buttons.
When not selected, the field on the bottom of every document Page displays
the Title of the current Page.
^
*Change Text Size*
When selected, a checkmark appears to the left of the menu item. When
you select "Change Text Size," the text size will change from its default
of 9-point to 12-point. Nine-point is the only size acceptable for the
display of text on Second Sight and other bulletin boards.
NOTE: Text Size is only changed in Tables of Contents, Folded Tables of
Contents and Document Pages. No other text is affected!
^
*Change Text Font*
When selected, a checkmark appears to the left of the menu item. This menu
item is grayed out when the "Change Text Size" is NOT selected. When selected,
you are presented with a dialogue asking for a new font (the default is Monaco),
then you may enter any font name currently in your font menu. To check your
choice, select some text on any document Page and pull down the font menu. The
current font will have a checkmark to its left. When you have selected a new
font and select this function a second time, Waldo will sound an alert and
will change the font back to the default Monaco font. You may now select a
new font if you wish.
NOTE: Text Fonts are only changed in Tables of Contents, Folded Tables of
Contents and Document Pages. No other text is affected!
CAUTION: use no text styles other than Plain and Underline as they will effect
the functioning of the HyperButtons function.
CAUTION!! Authors, if you use a font other than Monaco 9-point to format your
document, please tell the reader on the first Page that he must select that
font from his Menu! This is very important to maintain the correct
formatting of the document. Do not forget that Monaco 9-point is necessary
for the proper display of text on BBSs! If you wish to display text on a BBS
and also want to use a different font for Waldo reading, it is recommended that
you use Monaco 9-point for composing the original document and then create a
copy to reformat with another font for downloading by readers, Then be sure to
tell the reader what the font's name and size is. New York 12-point is a good
choice as most all Mac Systems have that font. Layout is not critical
if the document is not to be displayed on a BBS. Therefore it does not need
a return at the end of each line--and should not. Experiment.
^
*HyperText Functions*
When selected, a checkmark appears to the left of the menu item. When NOT
selected, all HyperText functions are hidden from view, including the
HyperButton item in the Waldo menu (this is the Novice mode). Novice mode is
recommended as you first learn to use Waldo. Select Novice mode and concentrate
on learning basic navigation functions. After you feel comfortable with Waldo,
then select the HyperText functions and proceed to learn these more advanced
features.
^
*Second Sight Functions*
When selected, a checkmark appears to the left of the menu item. When NOT
selected, all Second Sight functions are hidden from view. If you are not
going to use your copy of Waldo with a Second Sight BBS (if you do not have
Second Sight), then it is recommended you hide these functions. Also when NOT
selected, the load for output option is removed from the load file dialogue.
^
¥3
*HyperButton*
When on Import Page, this menu item is grayed out and is not available.
When selected, a button will appear on the screen (Command B will also select
this function) which follows the cursor. Position it over a word you wish to
spot. Holding down the Shift key will spot that particular text.
You may set up to 100 spots in a Queue.
(Queue, a common British term meaning to line up, is pronounced "Q.")
NOTE: The HyperButton spots you save to a Queue are "relative" to the SIZE
and FONT used at the time you save spots. So,.if you reuse a saved Queue
and the Size or Font of the text is different than when you set them, then
they will appear in queue but out of place. Also, if you were to change SIZE
or FONT of text while constructing a Queue, then it will NOT function correctly
and will give FALSE positioning.
HyperButton will ATTEMPT to warn you of mismatched Queues but will
not always be able to, so exercise care in naming Queues, when they
will be saved and reused.
So the rule of thumb with Queues is to always use the same SIZE and FONT
of text when constructing and viewing a Queue. Editing a document after
you create a Queue will change the spots' positions on the page. Changing
the Text Style, with the exception of underline, will change placement
(You could save each Queue into its own folder with the size and font appended
to the end of the folder name and name the folder the same as the document:
e.g., Docs12NY.hl).
These Queues may be saved to disk with the utility icon with "HB" on it. The
utility also erases, loads and names the Queues.
Either selecting HyperButton from the Waldo menu or entering, Command B, from
the keyboard will display the HyperButton. If any spots have been saved to the
Queue, then you may hold down the Option key to display the first spot.
Subsequent Option key presses will display each spot in the Queue in the
order it was entered. (New spots are entered AFTER the CURRENT spot in the
Queue.)
When in HyperButton the message box display at the bottom of the Waldo window
displays:
>X/Y [] Shift=Add Opt=Go Cmnd=List/Note Click=Exit
The X position is the number of the next Spot to be displayed in the Queue.
The X position is highlighted IF there is a Note for that Spot.
The Y position is the total number of Spots in the Queue.
The [] position is the, [Name of Queue]
NOTE: When moving HyperButton, if the cursor is moved above the field, then the
field will scroll up and, if moved below the field, then the field will scroll
down.
Holding down the Command key will give you the option of a List view of
the Queue or the option of adding a note to the next Spot in the Queue.
Notes: Selecting the Notes option will display the next HyperButton in the
Queue. (If you hold down the Shift key while selecting the Note option then
you will be taken directly to the Note screen WITHOUT displaying the
HyperButton.) Then Click and you will be shown the Note screen. On the Note
screen you have the options: Exit Prev(ious) Next List Save.
Exit takes you back to the Page you left and to your PREVIOUS Spot in the Queue.
It also saves any changes or additions to the Note.
Previous displays the Notes, if any, for the previous Spot in the Queue.
If you do NOT hold down the Shift key while clicking on Prev then the
next HyperButton will be displayed before it's Notes. Holding down the Shift
key will bypass the display. It will beep when you are already on
the first spot.
Next displays the Notes, if any, for the next Spot in the Queue.
If you do NOT hold down the Shift key while clicking on Next then the
next HyperButton will be displayed before it's Notes. Holding down the Shift
key will bypass the display. It will beep when you are already on
the last spot.
List will take you to the List view of the Queue
Select, Note, Reset, and Exit are the options on the List screen
Select chooses the highlighted line for either deleting or moving up/down
within the Queue. Clicking aborts the selection.
Note will display the Note screen for that Spot. (Holding down the Shift
key will bypass the display of the HyperButton associated with the Spot.
Reset will reset the Queue to the line highlighted.
Note: The "[]" in the Message Box displays [Next Spot in Queue].
Exit will exit to the last Document Page displayed.
Save allows you to save the Notes to a text file on your disk.

*|BUTTONS-Import Page|*
^
*IMPORT*
This button is an icon of a Page being added to a book.
This button will IMPORT a document into Waldo. The document must
have been formatted in order to be loaded properly into Waldo.
The Second Sight functions in Waldo give a second option of IMPORT
for OUTPUT. This second option does not use the standard Macintosh
interface but does interface with the File List function--see File List for
further information.
^
*DELETE PAGES*
This button is an icon of a Page being "torn" from a Book.
If there are any Document Pages (Pages other than the Import Page),
this function will delete all Document Pages.
^
¥1
*OUTPUT*
SECOND SIGHT FUNCTION (This is displayed only when Second Sight in
the Waldo menu is checked.)
This button is an icon of exporting to Second Sight from a Book.
This button is visible only when Second Sight functions are selected and
after a document has been loaded with the Output option in the load dialogue.
It will create a text file for each Page in your document as well as a
Table of Contents and a Survey File for Red Ryder Host V 2.0+ (RRH) or
Second Sight (SS) BBS software to read. The Survey File, filename-S, when
accessed from a simple menu command 41, will drive online access to those
text files.
The reader can have the main Table of Contents as well as Folded Pages
(or sub-Tables of Contents) and the ability to Save and Recall Pages
from a dynamic Table of Contents he creates while online.
The Output function will Save text files to a folder with a “-F” extension
(ART will reside in ART-F). So you must have a folder with a file
(the file to process) in it with the same name minus the “-F” extension. The
file to process will be called ART and it will be in the ART-F folder. The
OUTPUT files Waldo creates will be put into the “ART-F” folder.
NOTE: ONLY if Waldo Output is to be viewed online on a BBS (Bulletin
Board System), should EVERY line of text must end with a RETURN. Otherwise
only lines of formatting and paragraphs need to end with a RETURN.
NOTE: If you edit any Pages IN Waldo and then create Second Sight files,
the editing will be reflected in the files "output" but not in the original
file "loaded" on disk.

Button Lists, Title Lists and HyperButton Lists to and from disk.
You may also Name and Erase Lists in Waldo. The Second Sight functions allow
the operations to be performed on File Lists from the Import Page.
NOTE: When naming Lists, use this convention:
Title List name.tl

HyperButton List name.hl (remember SIZE and FONT are critical to HBs)
File List name.fl
NOTE: Waldo will NOT ALLOW you to use the incorrect extension when saving,

*|More about Waldo and Second Sight|*
^
*Waldo has special Second Sight Bulletin Board System (BBS) Output*
Waldo has special Output features built in for the purpose
of creating a special Waldo document and program (SURVEY SCRIPT).
With Waldo, the BBS is given new features. Waldo documents have online
Tables of Contents as well as Folded Pages. The reader may save Pages
to a personal Table of Contents List (PTCL). The PTCL will stay active
until the reader exits the document. The PTCL allows a reader to create
a List of those Pages he wishes to read. After creating a List, the reader
may access his Pages from the PTCL.
^
*The Best Way for SYSOPS--BBS System Operators*
The best strategy for a Sysop is to maintain a single folder in which to keep
Waldo programs. It is in this folder that you maintain a folder for
each online Waldo document. The document you load into Waldo should
remain in its folder. Waldo outputs a series of files into this folder.
Your Menu 41 command should access the file with a "-S" (meaning Survey)
extension. (This is the Survey Script that allows Pages, Folded Pages, Tables
of Contents, Sub-Tables of Contents and Personal Tables of Contents Lists.)
Waldo documents are perfect for any online text as well as online magazines.
The Sysop should create a listing in the download section for each Waldo
document so that subscribers may download the original document to be
read with Waldo offline. There are several programs: Events Database™,
MacProduct™ database and Messages>Waldo™ for Second Sight.
Waldo is ShareWare software and may be distributed as long as all documentation
is included. Any ARTWAY program marked FreeWare or ShareWare may be freely
distributed as long as all original documentation is included and not modified
or any additional documents added.
^
*Completely configured Second Sight/Waldo BBS systems* are available from
ARTWAY, as are custom systems. Other HyperCard software, including custom
utilities for Waldo and custom versions of Waldo, are available.

*|Final Words About Waldo, ShareWare and SoftWare|*
^
*Copyrights and Copying Software*
An individual, who has registered an ARTWAY ShareWare or commercial program,
may make as many copies of that program as he wants for his own, single
person, use.
All programs marked as FreeWare are Copyrighted programs but may be
distributed free of charge by individuals and Sysops and companies
who distribute FreeWare and ShareWare programs. No specific charges may
be levied for individual programs. ShareWare programs are also
Copyrighted software and may be distributed free of charge by individuals
and Sysops and companies who distribute FreeWare and ShareWare programs.
No specific charges may be levied for individual programs. None of the files
may be modified in any way, and no extra files may be added without written
permission from the author. No ARTWAY commercial programs may be distributed.
Waldo may not be distributed on disk, or electronically together with
document files, by authors or publishers without first obtaining a yearly
license at the current rate of $75 per year. Write for details.
NOTE: The sound level in Waldo is set by way of an XFCN copyrighted by
Farallon Computing, Inc.
^
*Authors/Publishers*
Those who are publishing Waldo books, magazines or documents need NOT obtain
any special permission, but they must register THEIR copy of Waldo as soon
as they publish with Waldo online or as soon as they distribute in Waldo
format. The publisher/author is NOT responsible for readers registering
their copies of Waldo. However, you are asked to encourage readers to
register their copies.
Authors who want to distribute WALDO itself must obtain a license from
ARTWAY. There is a $75 per year fee for AUTHORS to distribute the WALDO
program. This entitles the author to program updates and other information.
This fee applies only to authors who want to distribute the WALDO program
on some storage medium such as a floppy disk or who want to distribute Waldo
together electronically with the author's works.
This does not apply to ShareWare distributors or Users' Groups or distribution on
BBSs where WALDO is distributed by itself.
Publishers and authors are encouraged to send to ARTWAY notice of and copies of
Waldo publications for inclusion in an international register--please include
reader statistics.
Unauthorized distribution of ARTWAY programs with commercial software is
prohibited unless special licenses are obtained from the author for that
purpose.
